21 Years of Chair Design – MillerKnoll, Mark Keane
November 30th, 2021 - January 2022

MillerKnoll sponsors an annual chair design competition in partnership with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning – UW Milwaukee.

Arch 100 students enter the chair competition as their third design project of the semester to design and construct a model chair. A MillerKnoll team member visits the class to provide insight and tips on chair design. The class begins designing model prototypes and creating marketing plans for their chairs. The students learn how to apply math, geometry, and ergonomics to their designs. They also learn about materials and construction methods and how those choices impact the cost of the chair. The winner is invited to MillerKnoll to build his/her prototype full scale with the help of their Research & Development Team. To further the diverse design talent funnel and promote innovative product design, MillerKnoll Cares provides scholarships for the top three designers, encouraging their continued interest in and love for the design field.
