ARCH 820

ARCH 820 is the second core studio in the career-change Master of Architecture program.  It serves students with a variety of backgrounds in other (non-architecture) disciplines.  The objective of the course is to complete students’ year-long ramp-up prior to entering the general graduate student population in the following year.  ARCH 820 focuses on further development of knowledge and skill in the fundamentals of architectural design.  It prepares students to handle increasingly large and complex design projects.  Because of heavy NAAB requirements on this course, it simulates the phases of a professional project including Pre-Design Research and Programming, Master Planning, Schematic Design and Design Development.  Students learn how to draw plans and sections, how to build models, how to make renderings, how to collaborate, how to perform a variety of efficiency and ecological analyzes, the basics of structure, how to formulate a basic program, how to site a building, and a variety of other design basics.  For most of these students, the project they design in this course is the first full-fledged piece of architecture they have ever designed.

This garden design inhabits a plot of unused space surrounding the Southridge Mall on the south side of Milwaukee as part of a larger strolling path. In addition to creating a lush forest garden space, this design not only responds to the program conditions of three shops, two restaurants, a concert stage, and a hedge labyrinth maze, but also celebrates a beloved Grecian goddess, Artemis. As the protector of the forest and goddess of the hunt, Artemis inspired a strolling path that harkens back to the celebrations revering the goddess ancient Grecians would hold. Patrons would have to weave through the trees and brush, guided by the sounds of music and jubilance. The incorporation of multiple paths for patrons to choose through the canopy layers of the plot help instill a sense of adventure in this design while the music and trees act as a guide. The climax of this design lies in the heart of the forest with a concert stage, outdoor restaurant seating and a complex labyrinth maze with a white opulent statue of Artemis herself at its center. The return journey to rejoin the larger strolling path surrounding the mall takes patrons under the lush canopy layer traversed in the first half of the procession and reveals a serene forest of white steel trees. All these elements combined create a forest hunt the goddess Artemis would have been proud to be honored by.

The shopping mall in America as we know it today is failing. Rippling Meadows is a design that proposes what could be its future. As part of a larger loop around Southridge Mall, this design provides a rewarding journey through a series of sprawling flower meadows within a dizzying conservatory. The architecture throughout the journey is unified by a complex wood core and two spanning walls of terracotta and painted metal. The gardens and architecture work together to allow visitors to engage with dramatic and complex systems and subtle and focused details. Inspiring choices or thoughts that impact a person beyond their visit.
